Q There are often observable phonetic and semantic patterns in first word development. Before reading Chapter 7, make a list of 5 words that you believe would be included in a child’s first lexicon. Write out the adult spelling and a phonetic transcription (how the child would pronounce that word). Now create your own hypothesis as to why these might be the first words. What appear to be the most prevalent first sounds and first grammatical categories (noun, verb, exclamation, etc.)? What are the most frequent intentions (requesting, social interaction, attracting attention)?
